Since the year 2000, 12th August is observed as International Youth Day. It is an awareness day which was started by the United Nations. The prime purpose of celebrating this day to highlight the importance of youths and various cultural and legal issues related with them. International Youth Day celebrations include organization of rallies and programs to support development of youth across the globe.
The world has never been so young and it is getting younger every day. The development of any society depends on how well it nurtures its young people as well as how well they are being supported.
Despite the fact that young people are among the most affected by the multiple and often interlinked forms of violence, youths play active roles as agents of positive change. No wonder it is said that “the hopes of the world rest on young people”.
Recently, youths have taken center stage in playing active role in Politics, Business, decision making, Innovation and Entrepreneurship etc despite global Political instability, labour market challenges and limited space for participation.
In our own community, young people have demonstrated their strengths and desire to change the status quo as well as rewrite the algorithm. Few days ago, five girls from Regina Pacies Secondary school Onitsha representing Nigeria and Africa floored other contestants at the global #Technovation Competition at Silicon Valley, USA. This is a pure indication that if given the right opportunities and platform, youths will continue to put the State/region/country in the global map of Innovations/Technology.
As a community of creative young people passionate about building transgenerational businesses/innovations that will disrupt the global business/innovation ecosystem, Startup Anambra joins the rest of the world to celebrate this day as we strive for a better atmosphere to do more.
We therefore charge other young people to be the change that everyone needs. Create the world of yourself by yourself. Do not wait for anybody/government to create your world for you, you will grow old doing that. Believe in yourself and your abilities, and you will become a great tomorrow.
Happy International Youth day to you all!
