- While we were going about our normal activities at DevAmplify Hub yesterday, a little lad simply identified as Benjamin walked into the office in the company of his friend. He looked around and smiled.
I was watching him since I was temporary occupying the position of the front desk and he simply waved his friend to sit at the Lobby while he discussed with me.
“Good morning sir, my name is Benjamin. I am an SS1 student of IGSA and I want to learn coding”. I smiled and asked him to sit down.
Why do you want to learn coding? I asked and he answered: “I already knows a lot of things about Technology and I want to be Nigerian No 1 youngest and the most famous programmer. I have built apps before using eclipse and I spend all my nights surfing the internet, reading about emerging technologies and innovations”
I smiled and asked him to tell me More. He continued.
“My Uncle bought me a Mackbook and since I don’t stay at the hostel, I find time to visit my friend who knows how to design using Photoshop, so I allowed him to work with my laptop while I learn. I have been making small money since after learning”. I also know about “Deep web” and “Ethical Hacking”.
Wow! How old are you? ” I will be 14this year” he said.
I smiled and asked him the kind of programming he would want to learn and why he choosed it.
“I know about Cobol, FORTRAN, C++… But those ones are outdated. I also know about HTML and CSs but that’s not what I want to learn. I have build apps using Java on Eclipse but now, I want to learn Python so I can build artificial intelligence Machines and do some other crazy stuff”.
At this point, my mouth was wide open as I watched the little lad speak and tell me things about programming and Technology.
See Benjamin, Here we charge people to teach them and our prices are quite expensive. Hope your parents can be able to pay for you so you can learn. He smiled and asked: ” Uncle do you Code?” I shook my head negatively he smiled: ” Uncle do you design?” I also shook negatively. “See uncle, I will teach you how to build apps on Java and use Photoshop. I will also teach you how to hack WiFi networks and reconfigure your phone so you will be using free WiFi while you get someone from your office to teach me”
I laughed out loud and backoned on Some colleagues to come hear from the lad. I asked him about other of his mates and how he would want to learn programming since he’s still in secondary school. And he said: “We have walked around Awka looking for a good place to learn until we went to bank and someone told us about you”. “We are many and if you come to my school, we have a computer Lab and they dont normally allow us to Use it. So we normally subscribe for Airtel N200 and use it to learn all through the night”.
“Uncle, its not as if I want to learn Hacking and start stealing or doing bad things, my dad died when we were small and my mum couldn’t run her small shop because of fund. Now she’s staying at home and like today, I didn’t go to school because she cannot afford N5000 to buy me traditional wears which is worn on Wednesdays”.
At this point, I now introduced him to Mr Chuka Chukwurah, the CEO of ProgXap, Mrs Chioma Udoh, the CEO of Recyclepro, Miss Onyinyechi Nmecha, the CEO of Extraclass as well as our Recent Cohorts and other hub users. Everyone was marvelled at the intelligence and the zeal of this small boy.
They all promised to assist the young Chap as well as other of his young friends achieve their dream. We immediately created a Track for young people to learn programming and Technology as a whole as well as promised to assist they get work devices.
We told him about the StartupAnambra Catch-Them-Young program and he so fell in love with it. He told us a lot of this about secondary schools and how we can replan and get the desired result. We took some shots and trust me, it was a wonderful Yesterday.
